RoHS is an acronym for "Restriction of the use of Certain Hazardous Substances," which refers to the ban on the use of hazardous sub- stances in electronic equipment under European Parliament directive2002/95/EC and also, informally, to the upcoming prohibition on some of the same substances in some electronic devices sold or offered for Sale in California. The objective of the RoHS Directive (2005/618/EC), effective 1 July 2006, is to restrict the use of six hazardous chemicals -- lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI), cadmium (Cd), polybrominated biphenyl flame retardants (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ether flame retardants (PBDE) -- in electrical and electronic equipment.
